The Times Fear Won: A Reflection on My Journey as Founder of AfriKin

As I reflect on the path that led to the creation of AfriKin, I’m struck by a powerful realization: fear often won. More than once, I found myself succumbing to the pressure of following trends, adopting what others believed to be necessary, instead of trusting the quiet whisper of my heart. Over the years, I’ve learned that the greatest victories are not always the applause, the recognition, or the approval from those around you. Rather, they often lie in staying true to your mission, even when the world is screaming for you to take the safer route.

When I first began AfriKin, I sought to create something far more significant than just a company. I wanted to establish a movement—a platform for celebrating the rich diversity and resilience of cultures, particularly those of African and diasporic communities. But along the way, the fear of failure, of not being understood, and of losing the backing of others crept in. The pressure to conform to what seemed “marketable” or “popular” was real.

I found myself chasing applause instead of purpose. I realized that applause, while affirming, was not the currency with which I had started this journey.

The applause of the world often leads you to a place where you’re validated by others, but it doesn’t necessarily align with your true mission. As much as I appreciated the kind words and encouragement, they often felt hollow compared to the silent, steady yearn in my heart I held for the true vision of AfriKin, even when the spotlight was blinding.

I had to come to terms with a difficult truth: progress comes with pain. Building AfriKin required relentless dedication, long hours, and sacrifices. But the truth about those sacrifices is that they are part of the process. The quiet grind, the moments when others might not understand or support the mission—these were the moments that tested my resolve. But in those very moments, I found clarity.

I also had to learn that not everyone who starts the journey with you will finish with you, and that’s okay. People come and go, and each has their own path to follow. In those instances, I learned to send love and support to those who moved on, knowing that our paths had crossed for a reason, and wishing them success in their own endeavors. However, what remained was my unwavering focus on the larger mission of AfriKin.

AfriKin was founded with a singular purpose: to bridge divides. We are not just a cultural platform, but a movement, uniting people from all walks of life through shared understanding, respect, and celebration of our diverse heritages. Through our events, art, and community engagement, we hope to foster a space where dialogue can flourish, where healing can begin, and where we can collectively create a better world. This vision became clearer as I continued the journey. I also learned that staying on course, staying true to the mission, and trusting that progress is often unseen until it suddenly bursts into something bigger than what you had ever imagined was the key to real success.

As AfriKin celebrates its 10th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on how far we’ve come. We’ve created a space where cultural expression meets social change, where people not only celebrate their heritage but also come together to make a difference. But the journey isn’t over. The next decade is about growth and expansion. It’s about asking ourselves: What can we offer our community? How can we make our vision stronger, more inclusive, and more impactful?

At the heart of AfriKin lies a profound purpose: to celebrate and elevate our diverse cultural heritage while fostering a global community rooted in understanding and unity. But we cannot do this alone. We need your voices, your feedback, and your participation. As I think about the next decade for AfriKin, I want to hear from you, our community. What do you think we can do better? What would you like to see more of from AfriKin?

Our value proposition to our community is simple: AfriKin is a place where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and every individual is an integral part of a shared human experience. We have the power to uplift each other, to heal, and to move forward together.
