A cross-disciplinary exhibition celebrating contemporary African art & culture during Miami Art Week
Curated by Joseph L. Underwood
This exhibition is a curated selection of works by artists from Africa and its Diaspora that represent the dynamism of creativity from the continent today. Finding a sense of self and belonging from the works they create, these ~60+ artists all speak to a sense of home. Coming at a critical moment in world history, as borders become more closed off, as nations re-evaluate the status of passport and visa holders, and as big tech sees users as mere data, artists can offer a meaningful reflection on what makes us humanβfrom the tangible masterpieces we create with our hands and hearts, to how we intentionally connect with our families, neighbors, and communities by the stories our artworks tell.
As we seek grounding in these trying times, this exhibition invites you to find a sense of home. Who are you and where do you belong? As you join the artists in their conversations and on their journeys, we are confident you'll find a resonance with your own story.
SCENES From HOME is organized across six subthemes that focus on different aspects of what constitutes this sense of home, whether it be the physical environment, the people in your orbit, or the spiritual connections that root you as a person. Conceived as almost standalone exhibitions, these subthemes include:
