Taste of AfriKin Returns for Miami Spice's 25th Anniversary

Last week I told you the full story of Taste of AfriKin deserved its own moment, not a headline shared with a World Cup final. That tournament is still being decided as I write this. But five weeks out from Labor Day, the moment cannot wait for a final whistle. Today, tickets are officially live, and the table needs guests.

Run it through the compass question I have been using all month: what permanent asset now exists because this happened? For Taste of AfriKin, the answer is the most literal one yet. Every ticket sold is commerce that only exists because culture built the room for it first, and every seat filled becomes evidence, on the record, that Global Africa's table can sustain itself.

Twenty-Five Years of Miami Spice

This year Taste of AfriKin returns inside a milestone season. Miami Spice, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau's signature dining program, celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026, running August 1 through September 30 across Greater Miami and Miami Beach. Congratulations to the GMCVB and to every restaurant that has carried Miami Spice for a quarter century, putting this city's dining scene in front of the world one prix fixe menu at a time.

Why We Build a Table Every Year

AfriKin's programming is not a list of unrelated events. It is a hierarchy, and each program is built to do one specific job inside a single institutional argument: culture creates commerce, commerce strengthens community, and community safeguards culture for generations to come.

Art and the Beautiful Game carries that argument through visual art and sport diplomacy, open now through October 2. The AfriKin Art Fair carries it through the market and the museum going public, eleven years running and now building toward its twelfth. African Fashion Week Miami carries it through design and the body. CHANGÁ: Griot Moves carries it through documentary and scholarship.

Taste of AfriKin carries it through the table, and it is the clearest, most literal expression of that first link in the chain. Chefs, ingredients, and technique convert directly into ticketed revenue that reinvests in every other program on this list. There is no more direct proof of the thesis than a receipt.

At the center of the evening sits the Jollof Cook-Off, staged as both culinary competition and cultural celebration. Chefs representing West African and Caribbean traditions each bring their own definitive version of jollof rice to Maison AfriKin, prepared live and judged before a panel of culinary tastemakers, and a room full of guests with opinions of their own. The winner leaves with the title, the bragging rights, and a place in Taste of AfriKin history.

It is a joyful argument Global Africa has been having for generations, staged in public, right here in North Miami.

Fifteen Nations. One Table.

This year's program features participating food and beverage traditions from the following countries, presented in alphabetical order:

From the Horn of Africa to the Dutch Caribbean, from West Africa to the Guianas, and reaching into Southeast Asia with Cambodia's inclusion, Taste of AfriKin gathers Global Africa's culinary traditions, and the Black world's furthest reaches, under a single roof for a single night.

Guests move through a curated evening of passed plates and chef stations, framed by live music pulling from Afrobeat, soca, and gwo ka in equal measure, and original visual art on display throughout Maison AfriKin's gallery walls. Smoked jollof, oxtail so tender it falls from the bone, plantain caramelized to the edge of sweetness, jerk spice riding the smoke off an open flame, and cocktails infused with hibiscus, ginger, and sorrel. Global Africa is not a category of cuisine. It is a civilization, and it eats like one.

Food as Cultural Infrastructure

We have started building something new at afrikin.org this year: a Knowledge Graph, ten pages and counting, the canonical reference for the ideas and institutional framework behind everything we build. It is early, and we are still filling in pages. But the entry on Culinary Heritage says plainly what Taste of AfriKin has always been in practice: a recipe carried across an ocean is an archive, whether or not anyone ever writes it down.

Food, like art, like fashion, like scholarship, is cultural infrastructure when an institution treats it as more than a single consumable event. The Jollof Cook-Off is not simply a competition. It is a public argument about lineage and technique, staged in front of a room that includes diplomats, civic leaders, and press. Co-presented with GMCVB as part of Miami Spice, Taste of AfriKin places that argument inside the same regional tourism and economic infrastructure that AfriKin's other programs use to convert cultural activity into lasting institutional relationships, not just a single evening of good food.

While the table gets set for September, the door is still open for November. The 12th Annual AfriKin Art Fair, GRIOT: Urgent Storytelling for Our Times, curated by Dr. Joseph L. Underwood, is accepting artist submissions through August 1, 2026, extended from the original July 7 deadline due to overwhelming demand.
