There is a conversation that has been happening in our community for decades. It goes like this: we create the culture, and someone else profits from it. We invent the style, and someone else sells it back to us. We produce the music, grow the food, develop the fashion language that the world borrows from and brands as its own - and we watch someone else capture the margin.

This Thursday, June 11, the FIFA World Cup 2026 officially opens as South Africa faces Mexico in Mexico City - the first match of what promises to be the most consequential tournament in the history of the sport. It is the first World Cup hosted across three nations. It is the first time the tournament reaches 48 teams. And for Africa, it is a moment that has been building for a century.

South Africa's return to the World Cup stage carries weight that goes far beyond football. It is a statement of resilience. Of a continent that has always contributed more to this game than the trophies have reflected. When Bafana Bafana take that opening kick in Mexico City, they carry the hopes of an entire continent watching from home - and from the diaspora.

We have been building toward this moment for two years. Our exhibition, Art and the Beautiful Game: Africa on the World Stage, is open right now at Maison AfriKin, 1600 NE 126th Street, North Miami. The response from the community has been extraordinary. Guests are coming in and not wanting to leave. They are standing in front of the wall panels reading every word. They are talking to each other about players and nations they did not know they had in common.

While the World Cup brings the planet's attention to what Africa produces on the pitch, AfriKin is building the space where Africa's artistic production gets its full reckoning off of it. The 12th Annual AfriKin Art Fair - GRIOT: Urgent Storytelling for Our Times - runs November 29 through December 6, 2026, during Miami Art Week. Curated by Dr. Joseph L. Underwood.

The griot does not wait for permission to tell the truth. The griot shows up and speaks. If your work belongs in this room - if you are building a practice rooted in the African diaspora, if you have something urgent to say and the craft to say it - we want to see your portfolio.
