Why We Built Taste of AfriKin

People ask me often what Taste of AfriKin actually is, and the honest answer takes longer than a tagline ever could. It began, and it still begins, with a simple need: a safe space where families could come together to celebrate each other and their culture through food, art, and entertainment. Nothing more complicated than that. Food has always been the way to a person's heart and their soul, and African and Caribbean food carries its own love language, one that speaks before a single word passes at the table.

There is a great deal happening around us right now. Economic pressure, emotional weight, physical and mental strain, more than most people carry comfortably or admit out loud. Many of us are quietly holding space for others without a place of our own to set that weight down for even one evening. I built Taste of AfriKin because I wanted Maison AfriKin to be that place. A room where people could come to breathe, to relax, to let their hair down. A place to exhale.

We built this evening as a gathering of love and camaraderie, a room with no judgment and only upliftment. Hold close the people who genuinely have your best interest at heart, and learn to recognize them. Tell them what they mean to you while you still have the chance. Cherish the moment you are in. Laugh often. Take nothing for granted, not even the day itself. Life is precious, and it moves faster than any of us plan for. Let go of what no longer serves you, easily, and build the life you want with what you have and who matters to you.

These are the sentiments of the people we welcome to Taste of AfriKin every year. It is the joy you see on faces in our photographs and videos, the look of people who feel truly at home the moment they walk through the doors of Maison AfriKin. It is why our retention rate runs as high as it does, and why this evening grows every year without losing what made it matter in the first place.

Food, Fashion, Art, and Fifteen Nations on One Table

This year Miami Spice turns twenty-five, and we built something for that milestone bigger than a menu. Taste of AfriKin 2026 is a dinner show, food staged as a full sensory evening, with fashion, art, and music woven into the night rather than served in courses on separate stages. Fifteen countries across the African continent and diaspora bring chefs and cooks to present their own food, on their own terms, cooked by the people who carry it in their history. This is what a people loved looks like when it is put on full display.

The Insider Notes You'll Want After Labor Day Weekend

If you want to be part of the conversation after this Labor Day weekend, you will want to be in the room. You will want the insider notes: whose jollof had you going back for seconds, who took the crown, and which drink had you dancing until your feet ached. You will want to tell people how low you went in the limbo competition, and about the table next to yours with the champagne tower, because someone there was celebrating a birthday and the whole room joined in. These are the small, marvelous things you carry out of Maison AfriKin and repeat for weeks. But first, you have to be there this Sunday, September 6, in downtown North Miami, to remember it at all.

Title, Culinary Partner, Beverage, and Community sponsorship tiers remain open for this year's event, placing your brand inside Miami's signature African and Caribbean culinary platform during Miami Spice's twenty-fifth anniversary and FIFA World Cup 2026 season, in front of an audience that returns year after year and brings people with them. Can't Make It? Send Someone in Your Place

AfriKin Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Every ticket sold this Labor Day does two things at once: it puts you in the room for one of the best nights Miami will see all year, and it funds the work we do year-round to keep global African culture visible, funded, and celebrated in this city. If you can't make it September 6th but still want in, select the "Can't Attend, Donate an All Inclusive Seat" option on Eventbrite. We will place it with someone in our community who wants to be there and cannot afford the seat. Or go bigger and sponsor a few of those tickets. We will fill those seats with elders who have been asking to be part of this experience and never had the means to say yes.

We Are a 501(c)(3), and Every Gift Builds the Permanent Home

AfriKin Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 85-2592611, and every ticket, every sponsorship, and every gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Every ticket sold this fall funds a single evening. AfriKin's capital campaign funds the institution that makes every evening possible. We are raising $300,000 to convert a decade of proven cultural relevance, exhibitions, press, and civic recognition into a permanent home at Maison AfriKin: secured infrastructure, a funded season, and the staffing to operate as a lasting institution rather than a reconstituted event series each year.
