Obinna Makata

Obinna Makata (b. 1981, Lagos, Nigeria) is a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist based in Lagos, trained at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2007). Since 2012, he has participated in over 45 group exhibitions, art fairs, and biennales across Africa, Europe, and the Americas, including Art Basel Miami, Dakar Biennale, AKAA Paris, and New York Art Expo. Inspired by everyday life and the evolving culture around him, Makata works with found objects and waste materials to explore themes of history, race, identity, modernity, and social values in contemporary Africa. His mixed media collages combine African fabrics, ink, acrylic, and discarded materials to reflect the fragmented state of African culture under foreign influence. Beyond painting, he works in sculpture and installation, with notable works such as Medicine After Death, featured at the 2022 Dakar Biennale, and currently explores empty cartons to examine consumerism, letting materials serve the concept of each project.
