Biography

Ingrid Baars (b. 1969, Rotterdam, Netherlands) is a Dutch artist working with photography and digital collage to create portraits that explore identity and cultural aesthetics. A graduate of the Willem de Kooning Academy (1992), she transitioned from a career in illustration and photography to focus fully on her personal practice in 2010. Baars is known for her meticulous method of layering photographic fragments to depict Black women, drawing inspiration from classical African art, ancient sculpture, and early photography. Her Black Madonna series has been celebrated for its portrayal of strength, beauty, and vulnerability. Her work has been exhibited internationally, combining technical innovation with cultural reflection.
