Biography

Bernard Séjourné (1947–1994, Port au Prince, Haiti) was a Haitian painter and sculptor celebrated for his role in the School of Beauty movement, which honored women as symbols of strength and grace. Born in Port-au-Prince, he became known for his refined depictions of women, flowers, and landscapes painted on large Masonite panels with fluid acrylic lines and vibrant tropical tones. His mastery of color, rhythm, and abstraction gave his work a timeless elegance. Séjourné exhibited internationally at venues such as the Festival of Black Art in Dakar (1966), Expo 67 in Montreal, and the French Institute of Haiti (1972). In 1986, he was commissioned to design a label for Château Mouton-Rothschild’s Pauillac vintage. His legacy endures as a defining voice of Haitian modernism.
